Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
