Bungie's Challenged Action Game Project Marathon Is Gaining Momentum

The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, the studio's highly-anticipated project, has resurfaced with the news of a closed technical test set to take place soon.

A Rocky Development Journey

Initially revealed during the 2023 gaming showcase, the game has experienced a bumpy development cycle. Last fall, the developer announced it was aiming to begin alpha testing during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the project was re-revealed in spring with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, following initial testing resulted in mixed reactions, Bungie announced in June that it was delaying Marathon indefinitely.

Steering Clear of Controversy

Though Marathon has already seen its portion of issues, Bungie appears determined to ensure Marathon doesn't suffer Concord's fate. Currently, it appears the project's progress is finally getting back on track, as Bungie just disclosed that it has run "several closed playtests to gather feedback on the game" since this past summer. The developer is opening the doors a bit wider, enabling additional participants to get an early look of the game via an upcoming "closed technical test."

Technical Test Details

Considering it's a private testing phase, it's naturally limited access than, for example, an open beta. To gain access in the exclusive trial — which runs from October 22nd to October 28th — players must meet the listed requirements:

  • Submit an application via their platform
  • Live in Europe or North America
  • Own a PS5, Xbox Series X or S, or Windows PC (minimum PC specs include an Intel Core i5-6600 processor, supported graphics card, and sufficient memory)
  • Join the official Discord server
  • Sign an NDA via the Discord server

Application Process

Applications are open now, and to be eligible for the technical test, players must complete registration by the October 16th deadline. PC users can also register via Steam starting on October 13th, with digital platform registrations due by Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. PDT. Bungie will contact selected participants and provide details of the next steps.

"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we evaluate enhancements since the game's Alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, proximity communication, re-tuned combat pacing, individual matchmaking, deeper environmental storytelling, and more," Bungie stated. "That said, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a selection of what's intended for the game's final version, focused on the initial gameplay moments."

Additional Information

Additional details about the technical test and the actual experience can be found on the game's help page. But for players who don't qualify for the test (or don't have time), there's still good news: The developer says a official announcement on the state of the game is the next thing on the agenda once the test is over.

"We'll be sharing a comprehensive report on Marathon's development in the near future after the Closed Technical Test!" The studio announced.
